Workshop Title:
Walking: Past, Present and Future.

Description:
James Earls, author of 'Born to Walk' and 'Understanding the Human Foot' will take us on a journey through time to answer some important  questions - Why do humans walk the way we do? How did we develop this unusual method of moving around the world? What are the advantages and, importantly, disadvantages of walking on two feet? Walking is our most common method of moving around the world but we seem to be doing it less as we search for a world of ‘comfort’. Is that lack of movement and increased comfort doing us more harm than good?

This presentation will explore some of the highlights from our evolutionary history to see why humans are shaped the way we are. Our anatomical changes gave us certain efficiency advantages but they also changed how we respond and react during movement. Those evolutionary alterations can make us more prone to some injuries and discomforts. And our modern desire to minimise effort is putting us at further risk by increasing morbidity. Although modern medicine is excellent at increasing the length of life, our lack of movement and exercise exerts a strong influence on the quality of life in those final years.

James will finish the talk with a call to arms (or should that be ‘call to feet'??), by encouraging us to engage with politicians, planners, and anyone else with influence to ensure we provide safe, inviting, and varied places to walk and run.

Premium workshops are held inside the expo hall. A general admission ticket (purchased separately) is required.

Free workshops are open to anyone that has entered the expo hall with a general admission ticket. Free workshop access is on a first come, first served basis until the room reaches capacity.

Are premium workshop tickets refundable?

Refund requests must be sent no later than 24 hours before the start of the expo.
